Why Are Hotels So Dangerous As A Workplace?

When it comes to places of work being hazardous to your health, not many can match a hotel. What is it that makes working in a hotel more dangerous than working in an office? This article explores some of the common problems and reasons for accidents in hotels.

Speed Of Service

If you work or have worked in a hotel you will know that most things are done at great pace. Guests must be looked after and if they are waiting for food, for extra pillows or for information they want it delivered as quickly as possible. Frequently when staff work at a hotel it is while they are rushing from one location to another that they suffer injury, either colliding with other people, machinery or tripping over linen that has been left in piles in corridors. If the employer has not put in place systems to ensure that common areas are kept tidy and clear you may be able to make a claim for compensation.

Burns And Scalds

If you work in or around the kitchen then the chance of being burned or scalded are increased. If ill fitting lids are used on boiling liquids, or pans or pots are knocked off the hob then severe and painful burns can be suffered by the hotel staff.

Defective equipment can also lead to burns.

Spillages

Another common cause of injury in hotel kitchens are leaking appliances. From washing machines to dishwashers, if machinery has a leak and this is not repaired quickly it can soon lead to pools of water on the floor. If the hotel management are aware of the leak but do not take prompt action and someone slips on it and suffers an injury they will be able to bring a claim for compensation against the hotel.

Electrical Defects

With so many different electrical appliances in a hotel they can of course become defective or wires can become bare leading to a shock. It is usually the reaction to the shock (being thrown backwards) that leads to an injury being suffered.

Accidents Due To Poor Maintenance

Injuries can be suffered if a hotel is poorly maintained. From carpet that is lifting in places causing staff to trip over it, to lack of maintained lighting in dark basements, the chances of suffering an injury due to poor maintenance in a hotel is relatively high due to the large size of most hotels. If the hotel management do not have a good maintenance plan they may be found responsible for any injuries sustained due to poor maintenance.

Summary

If you work in a hotel there are many ways you can suffer an injury whilst working due to the amount of people working and staying there, and the frantic nature of the work. However, as in many areas health and safety has improved dramatically over the years and should continue to do so.
