Mobile Elevated Work Platform Accident

Matt was involved in a rather frightening accident at work in 2007 whilst going about the course of his work duties operating a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP).

Whilst he was in the process of carrying out some overhead railway line maintenance, his work colleague pushed the emergency button on the side of the MEWP which stopped the engine of the vehicle and cut all power to the control system in the basket of the MEWP where Matt was working. As a result of this and also as a result of the fact that Matt's colleague had not engaged the rubber wheels on the MEWP so as to stop the machine from moving, the MEWP was left with no braking system and began to roll away down the track.

The MEWP was soon careering out of control and Matt was left in the basket of the MEWP with no means of stopping the vehicle at all. After several miles Matt decided that his only chance of avoiding serious injury or indeed death was to jump from the MEWP onto the side of the track before it reached the next railway station. Matt was fortunate enough not to suffer any fractures but he did suffer soft tissue/muscular injuries to his arms; a large haematoma (bruising) to his right hip which left him with some permanent problems in that area; a minor head injury with concussion and, understandably, an adverse psychological reaction to the whole event!

Matt made a good although incomplete recovery from his physical injuries and indeed his psychological injuries. A letter was sent to the employer less than 4 months after the accident took place. After some delay the employers insurers confirmed that they were prepared to negotiate settlement of the claim. Matt received £9,250 and we ensured that he kept all of his compensation.
